China buzz complicates BHP's Rio bid: competing Chinese offer is considered unlikely, but talk could be costly

Business media in China and other foreign sources have indicated that the Chinese government and its state-owned firms may make a rival bid for Australian mining company Rio Tinto Ltd., competing against BHP Billiton Group. BHP's offer values Rio Tinto at $134.09 bil; reports suggest that China may go as high as $200 bil, or 40 times the worth of China's biggest overseas purchase to date.

Baidu.com's net profit advances nearly fourfold

Article Abstract:

Baidu.com Inc. of China posted a soaring net profit of 24.5 million Yuan ($3 million), up from 6.4 million Yuan last year. Revenue increases were due largely to the popularity of online advertising despite increased competition from other search engine rivals. Market share for Baidu.com Inc. is up to 46.5 percent from 33.1 percent last year.
