China's state retail firms fight back against rivals

Article Abstract:

China's state-owned retailing companies are modernizing their facilities and adopting Western-style management methods in an aggressive effort to counter growing competition from both domestic and overseas firms. Many are entering into joint ventures with foreign partners and building massive shopping complexes which cater to the increasing sophistication of Chinese consumers. These state-owned retailers enjoy advantages in their large customer base, reputation for low prices and prime location but analysts believe it will be difficult to match the strong growth of private-sector retailers.
