Chirpy cheap

Article Abstract:

There were mixed views about whether six new licences to operate digital phone networks in Hong Kong should have been awarded. Some observers believed that this move would create excessive competition, thus reducing profits for all operators. However, it seems that the strong growth of Hong Kong's mobile phone market will justify allowing new players to enter the market. There are already 1.5 million phones in use, and it is forecast that half of Hong Kong's population of 6.3 million will be using a mobile phone by the end of the 1990s.

Promises, promises

Article Abstract:

CCT Telecom Holdings stock performed extraordinary well on the Hong Kong stockmarket in the first eight months of 1997. The value rose by 1,263% during this period. Promises of Chinese mainland connections and future corporate performance fuelled the rise, but the strength of these promises is yet to be demonstrated. CCT hopes that the announcement of a deal with the Chinese Ministry of Electronics to establish a small mobile-phone network in Shanxi province will illustrate that its promises are well-founded.
