Classifying early product life cycle forms via a diffusion model: problems and prospects

Article Abstract:

The non uniform influence model for classifying the diffusion patterns of major new products is evaluated empirically. The classification system uses two parameters of interest that seem appropriate in estimating product locations in the diffusion map. However, instability of the parameters may lead to errors. To prevent this, system users are advised to use the joint confidence region when time-frames shift.

A comment on "Classifying early product life cycle forms via a diffusion model: problems and prospects" by Balasubramanian and Ghosh

Article Abstract:

Analysis of the data gathered through evaluating the non uniform influence model for predicting the product life cycle renders the model inapplicable. The apparent contradiction between the projected functions of the parameters used in the present model and the actual parametric instability makes the model unreliable. Future use of the model is possible when formulation of more reliable parameters exists.

Reliability criteria bolster product classification decisions: a reply to Jones

Article Abstract:

Concern expressed over the instability of the estimation techniques used for the parameters in the non uniform influence model for early life cycles of major new products is unfounded. The classification scheme remains valid since the target of the model is dynamic and short-term. Furthermore, the recommendation to use the joint confidence region to minimize estimation errors stands.
