Cleaned and preened: Japanese male hair-care products are booming

Article Abstract:

Shiseido and Kanebo, which lead the rapidly growing Japanese market for men's hair products, are spending millions of dollars on advertising aimed at young men. In addition to an ad campaign utilizing well-known young actors such as John Lone, Sean Lennon and Daniel Day-Lewis, they are providing a wide range of products, led by mousse and sprays. However, the cosmetics industry is also putting billions of yen into research on hair-growing products, because research has shown that men are beginning to lose their hair at an earlier age.

Futures and options: up to a million local Chinese could opt to leave

Article Abstract:

As many as a million Chinese residents of Hong Kong may have the right of foreign abode when China takes control of it in 1997, according to two recent studies. A collection of five surveys of eligible voters found 8.2% have the right of abode and 5.6% more are applying for it. Another study found 13% of residents in 1991 planned to leave before 1997, and since 1990, 60,000 people per year have left. Many of these highly mobile people are also skilled professionals, without whom Hong Kong would be much less valuable.

Radical for capitalism: former Maoist forms property-owning party

Article Abstract:

Real-estate executive Shih Wing-Ching has founded Hong Kong's newest political party to lobby the government on behalf of homeowners and against the growth of the welfare state. The 'Voice of Private-Property Owners' has gotten short shrift from critics who cite his inexperience, but he points to the 40% of Hong Kong residents living in self-owned housing. Ironically, Shih is a former Maoist who became disillusioned with his cause in the late 1970s and launched Centaline, now a major real-estate agency.
