Cleaning house: dissidents arrested in pre-congress clampdown

Article Abstract:

Vietnam's Communist Party is responsible for the arrests of several former and current Party members who have been advocating a change of philosophy for the Party because the current system is damaging Vietnam's economic prospects. Biologist Nguyen Xuan Tu was arrested in Dec 1995 because of statements advocating the delay of US trade privileges until democracy is strong while others were arrested relating to redress demands from Party members who were purged. The Jun 1996 party congress is likely the cause for the removal of dissidents.

Safety first

Article Abstract:

Vietnam's 8th congress concluded on July 1, 1996, with many important issues unresolved but conservative forces clearly ascendant, at least temporarily. The new five-member Politburo Standing Board has three military or security- related figures, including the troika of General Secretary Do Muoi, President Le Duc Anh, and Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet. Apparently the pace of social and economic reforms has pushed conservative sentiments and bureaucratic structures to their limits, though reforms will slowly progress.

Unfinished journey: regime has yet to win full sympathy in the south

Article Abstract:

Vietnam's ruling Communist Party has yet to recoup to public faith and support in enjoyed following the 1975 reunification of the country and squandered over the subsequent decade. Discussion of the past, however, remains a touchy subject for many Vietnamese, especially in the south. It was painful for many, and remains a sort of work in progress as the nation seeks a new internal and external balance.
