Clinton and Jiang find a framework for the future

Article Abstract:

The recent presidential meet between Bill Clinton and Jiang Zemin was monumental, as it was able to foster better and more respectful trade and political relations between China and the US. Although several negotiations remain unsettled, particularly the human rights issue, both parties are expected to conduct bilateral trade with lesser tension and pressure. Other vital issues which the two countries successfully resolved include the assurance that China would not help Iran develop nuclear weapons, conducting military-to-military exchanges and four-party talks.

China risks miscalculation in piracy feud with the U.S

Article Abstract:

Chinese leaders should take steps to examine the potential problems their country might face should they continue to fail to strictly enforce their intellectual property laws and punish violators. They cannot expect US officials and businessmen to stop its fight against intellectual piracy in China, since this crime is costing US businesses around $1 billion annually. To make matters worse for China, the offended parties mostly come from industries which US officials believe will contribute most to US competitiveness in the 21st century.

U.S.-China trade dispute may be an unruly genie

Article Abstract:

The current trade dispute between the US and China over intellectual property rights protection could significantly change trade relations between the two countries, even if the dispute reaches an amicable settlement. Political analysts warned that the conservative Chinese leaders could use the trade issue to rally nationalistic fervor among many Chinese. In addition, they raised concern over possible tensions between the military and Chinese reformers.
