Clinton's choice: aid for UN population projects but not in China

Article Abstract:

The Clinton administration will restore US financial support for the UN Population Fund (UNPF) at approximately $50 million beginning in FY 94. UNPF finances the efforts of countries to control their growing populations. However, Pres Clinton has also directed that no US funds go to China where women are reportedly being forced to have abortions. The Reagan administration ended US aid to UNPF in 1986 because of China's objectionable policy on abortion and also under the influence of supply-side economics which holds that population growth is economically beneficial.

A confidential Pentagon document calling on the US to continue its leadership role in the post-Cold War world is stirring heated debates over the country's foreign policy. The document, which was leaked to the press in early Mar 1992, proposes the establishment of a new world order with the US as the sole superpower. Potential superpowers, such as Germany, Japan, Russia and India, should be strongly discouraged from challenging US leadership in world affairs, the document asserts.

Dam under fire: World Bank report rekindles environmental row

Article Abstract:

An independent study commissioned by the World Bank has declared the Sardar Sarovar dam as flawed in design and unfit for completion. Study leader Bradford Morse even charged government and bank officials with deliberately violating their own resettlement compensation and environmental standards in an effort to railroad the project. The planned dam, one of the world's largest hydroelectric and irrigation projects, has been under construction since 1987.
