Clothing and footwear in Belgium

Article Abstract:

Research figures show that clothing output in Belgium fell by 18% in volume during 1996, with value production down 6.4% to BFr25.3 billion. Clothing industry sales during the year amounted to BFr87.9 billion, up 5.4% from 1995. Some 73% of clothing sales in 1996 were accounted for by exports. Separately, Belgium's footwear industry continues to contract, with output in 1996 amounting to 1.2 million pairs, against 2.3 million pairs in 1993. Footwear sales for the period reached BFr9.62 billion, although consumption fell to some 37 million pairs.

Footwear in France

Article Abstract:

Footwear production in France totalled 155 million pairs in 1994, valued at 14.3 billion francs. France is the third largest manufacturer of footwear in Europe, with exports accounting for some 33% of production and valued at 5.3 billion francs. The industry is characterised by a high degree of diversification in both price and product ranges. The largest sector is town footwear, representing some 36% of total production, followed by indoor footwear, accounting for 33.4% and sports & leisure footwear, accounting for 22.4%.

Prospects and forecasts for consumer spending: clothing, footwear, furnishings and leisure goods

Article Abstract:

The seven countries of Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and the U.K. account for more than 80% of the total GDP within the European Union. Prospects for the clothing, footwear, furnishings, furniture and leisure goods industries in the seven countries are analysed and consumer spending trends are discussed.
