War and peace

Article Abstract:

Colombia is negotiating with FARC guerrillas while also seeking military aid from the US to combat drugs. Some of the US funds would be used against the FARC where it is involved in the drugs trade. Meanwhile, paramilitaries have killed around 45 peasant farmers, reportedly for having sympathies with another guerrilla group, the ELN. Both the ELN and the paramilitaries want talks with the government, which plans to start talks with the ELN. The FARC opposes the inclusion of the paramilitaries in peace talks.

Colombia talks peace in the long shadow of war

Article Abstract:

Talks between the Colombian government and guerillas aim to end a long period of war that has meant the deaths of around 30,000 people, with 1 million people having to leave their homes. The talks involve Colombian president, Andres Pastrana, and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). There is still distrust between guerillas and the government, and a risk that guerillas warfare could intensify and involve the US. The US is concerned about links between the FARC and drugs trafficking.
