Companies in Hong Kong expect a prolonged slump

Article Abstract:

Australia-based human resources consultancy Morgan and Banks predicts continued layoffs and freeze hiring for Hong Kong's major employers in response to the prolonged recession. The survey, covering 78,256 employees, showed that 75% of polled companies see the economy recovering only after year 2000. Financial services, construction and engineering emerged as the likeliest industries for layoffs, with support staff and senior managers as the victims of job cuts.

Chinese trademark dispute highlights shifting attitudes

Article Abstract:

Tsingtao Brewery Company Ltd is suing its former Hong Kong distributor, China Beer Co, in hopes of regaining control over its trademark. The two state-owned beer companies have long been disputing whether Tsingtao gave its trademark to China Beer or simply assigned it in trust. Tsingtao's suit, which was filed with Hong Kong's High Court, demonstrates that Chinese businesses are increasingly aware that the country needs strong intellectual property laws.

Outlook is growing dimmer for Asian utility shares

Article Abstract:

Utility shares are getting unattractive for investors as lower interest rates remove the sector's appeal. Deregulation of utilities has also added to the sector's diminished appeal. HongKong Telecom's revenue dropped 3% as it loses the monopoly over international direct-dialing. Other Asian utilities expected to be adversely affected include CLP Holdings Ltd, Singapore Telecommunications Ltd and Hong Kong and China Gas Co.
