Compaq reboots to retain its market share in Asia

Article Abstract:

Compaq Computer Corp. pursued an aggressive Asian marketing strategy which allowed it to capture 10% of the region's computer market in 1994. Although successful, the strategy resulted in poor inventory flows and a substantial amount of unpaid loans. These problems allowed Compaq's competitors, IBM and Hewlett-Packard Co., to overtake Compaq in the Asian market in 1996. Realizing its mistakes, Compaq has started to work more closely with distributors to control inventory, tighten credit lines especially in China and crack down on illegal component trade.

Asia is new battleground for U.S. networking firms

Article Abstract:

US high-tech giants such as Microsoft Corp. and IBM are looking towards Asia, attracted by the region's growing demand for networking software and hardware. They are taking their rivalry to Asia, as illustrated by the near-simultaneous introductions of Microsoft's Exchange Server and IBM's Eagle network software packages. Analysts believe that Asia is a potentially huge market as most of the PCs in the region have yet to be connected.

New 3-D sound technology offers a cool way to enjoy Intel's MMX

Article Abstract:

Multimedia personal computers (PC) with MMX chips will soon feature hi-fidelity sound through the use of new 3-D sound technology. The MMX multimedia processors, which Intel introduced, allow PC users to experience out-of-this-world audio. Packard Bell, however, is the only computer maker that offers MMX models with 3-D sound so far. These new products would have to be sold in the US first.
