Compaq warns of a loss in the second quarter

Article Abstract:

Compaq Computer Corp. said that it would report an approximately $260 million loss for the second quarter of 1999. This would come out to 15 cents per share (14 European cents). The expected loss was attributed to increased expenses and disappointing revenues. Compaq also said that it terminated the organizational structure created by its former CEO, Eckhard Pfeiffer. Mr. Pfeiffer was forced out from the company in April 1999.

Texas Instruments net profit surges in first quarter

Article Abstract:

Texas Instruments Inc. announced an increase in its net income for the first quarter of 1999. The company posted quarterly net income of $233 million. Texas Instrument's operating profits rose to compensate for its struggling memory chip business. The quarterly figure also includes a $41 million pretax charge linked to Texas Instruments' consolidation of its semiconductor plants in Japan.

Chip woes damp Samsung profit; LG.Philips gains

Fourth-quarter net profit for Samsung Electronics Company Ltd. fell 6.8% to 2.21 tril won, as the business cycle for memory chips had a downturn. Revenue rose 11% to 17.48 tril won. Fourth-quarter net profit for LG.Philips LCD Company Ltd., however, posted a record 760 bil won, with results boosted by high flat panel television demand and lower costs.
