Comrades-in-arms

Article Abstract:

China has almost certainly helped Pakistan acquire nuclear technology and the two countries have a long-standing alliance. However, China has been withdrawing its support for Pakistan's discord with Kashmir and Afghanistan and the Chinese president has suggested the two countries resolve their differences. China has signed a border agreement with India, although President Jiang Zemin has maintained this will not harm relations with Pakistan. China is worried about the Taliban and Islamic fundamentalism. However, it confirmed its allegiance to Pakistan after the nuclear tests.

Isolated in Asia

Article Abstract:

American Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, said that the Taliban's record on human rights was appalling and Islamabad would face isolation unless it persuaded the Taliban to reach an agreement in Afghanistan. Other Asian countries have developed links with their neighbours but Pakistan has not. Relations with allies such as China and the U.S. are strained and the U.S. does not feel it can let the situation continue unchallenged, especially as the unrest is delaying gas and oil pipelines being layed through Afghanistan.
