Contenders step into the spotlight of a Beijing Olympics

Article Abstract:

The International Olympic Committee will decide on July 13 if Beijing gets to host the 2008 Summer Olympics. Hong Kong stock exchange-listed companies that may benefit from the Beijing Olympics include Beijing North Star, Beijing Enterprises Holdings, and Beijing Capital International Airport. But analysts warn that the Olympics do not guarantee the success of investments in Beijing-based companies.

Analysts are positive about Hong Kong firm Texwinca Holdings Inc., which manufactures knitted fabric and operates the Baleno chain of clothing stores. Retail sales in 2000 were more than HK$1 billion. A related graph shows the 2000 retail performance of Texwinca and its competitor Giordano International Ltd.
