Article Abstract:

The Philippine economy is expected to continue to expand at a faster rate in 1996 than in 1995 although signs of strain are appearing in the form of a rising inflation rate. Heavy investment inflows from abroad have sustained the expansion of the economy since 1993 by reducing the nation's current-account deficit. Philippine nationals working abroad remitted $4 billion and net inward investment reached $2.4 billion in 1995. Major tax reform is needed to stem the decline of government revenues as a percentage of gross domestic product.

On the hook: Ramos moves against Philippine phone firm

Article Abstract:

The Philippine government began stressing its authority over the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co in line with Pres Ramos' policy of opening the network for competition. This was done with the appointment of two new government representatives in the company's board of directors. The move is also part of a plan to regulate the power of the country's richest business families particularly the Cojuangcos.
