Convergence: ideal communication is here - but beware of the fine print

Article Abstract:

Nokia's engineers are working hard to make the mobile phone more useful to owners. Much of the research being conducted by the Finnish firm lies in the area of convergence since the company believes that the mobile phone can be transformed into an all-in-one information device. As proof of its commitment to cutting-edge technology, the firm has launched the Nokia 9110 Communicator which is one of the first cell phone models with the ability to connect with the Internet.

RSA Data Security of the US will help China with encryption software

Article Abstract:

RSA Data Security Inc. (RSA) and the Chinese government have signed an agreement for the development of encryption products based on the Redwood City, CA-based firm's technologies. Under the terms of the agreement, RSA will help to fund a Chinese project to develop encryption software using RSA's general mathematical formula. The US government prohibits the export of such technology but the RSA deal exploits a loophole in existing regulations.

Telecom's traveling circus: competing to lure buyers for new equipment

Article Abstract:

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) had the Asian Telecom '97 Exhibition in Singapore in June. The exhibition attracted the world's leading communications equipment makers, which hope to have bigger share of Asia's telecommunications market, the world's fastest-growing, according to the ITU. Some exhibitors employed entertainment to attract the participants' attention, such as Motorola Inc.'s lycra-clad dancers.
