Counting on women

Article Abstract:

Marie Antoinette Huguenin is the branch manager of the only women's bank in Switzerland. It is one of the 14 branches of the Banque Hypothecaire du Canton et Geneve devoted exclusively to women's finance and run almost entirely by women. Huguenin wants to make women feel more comfortable and better understood in her bank. The only other women's bank in Europe is the 'Ladies Branch' of the Royal Bank of Scotland, in Edinburgh. Of the 15 women's banks that emerged in the US, only five survive today, due to financial crises and equal lending laws of the late 1970's. Two of the surviving women's banks in the US are the First Women's Bank of New York and the First Women's Bank of Maryland.

Can Spain keep growing?

Article Abstract:

The Spanish economy has thrived since it joined the European Community in 1986. Inflation fell to 4.6 percent by 1987, domestic demand increased by 8.2 percent, and capital formation was up by 13.8 percent. Unemployment remains a major problem, however, with the labor force growing by hundreds of thousands annually at a time when unemployment stands at almost three million. Spain has been adding 700,000 new jobs annually, however. One unresolved question for Spain concerns when to join the European Monetary System.
