Creative contrasts of two rivals in design

Article Abstract:

The exhibitions of the work of eighteenth century British architects Robert Adam and William Chambers are put together very differently, but both provide a valuable insight into the work and practices of the two men. The Chambers exhibition is the more ambitious of the two, showing not only Chambers' architectural work, but also his chinoiserie, silver and furniture designs. The Adam exhibition shows how Adam developed as an artist and a draughtsman, providing examples of his designs for public architecture and country and town houses.

An architecture to remember the dead

Article Abstract:

Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition which looks at the significance of the Dulwich mausoleum and other tombs and monuments for the architectural practice and Royal Academy lectures of Sir John Soane. It includes details of many of Soane's designs, and is extremely informative. It particularly emphasises that Soane's interest in tombs and monuments was in line with contemporary concerns.
