Credit where credit's due

Article Abstract:

The Building Research Estabnlishment (BRE) has revised its environmental assessment method for new office buildings (BREEAM). The changes from the 1990 edition reflect increased knowledge and technical advances and increase the number of credits available from 27 to 42. There are new standards for CO2 emissions, acid rain, CFCs, recycling, and wind effects. New credits are available for reducing noise and overshadowing, water conservation, ecological enhancement, facilities for cycles, air quality and lighting. BREEAM has been criticised for not addressing energy use issues.

Windows as climate modifiers

Article Abstract:

Windows are now becoming more and more used to control heat, ventilation and daylight, instead of just making up part of the building skin. Colt International is currently developing the 'Interactive Window System', consisting of a thick but hollow subframe. The system could be used as a horizontal window strip or on its own. It features a little window at the top for ventilation control, and an external louvre to control daylight. Other new window development projects are also discussed.
