Cry of the innocents: the story of a Chinese girl sold into prostitution in Thailand

Article Abstract:

About 5,000 young girls from Yunnan province in southwestern China have been enticed to cross into Thailand where pimps have forced them to work as prostitutes in the thriving Thai sex industry. The case of Ee Chang, a 17-year-old girl of Yunnan's Tai minority, is representative. A false job offer caused her to travel to Thailand where she was sold into prostitution. A kindly Taiwanese businessman who paid the brothel owner to set her free and the Centre for the Protection of Children's Rights helped to return Ee Chang to her family. Only 36 girls have been rescued thus far.

The coming Indian crack-up

Article Abstract:

India's future as a unified, secular, democratic nation is in danger. Political corruption, of which the recent charges against Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao are the latest manifestation, is serious but merely delays rather than stops the country's progress. Far more ominous is the rise of politically oriented religious bigotry, among the Sikhs, the Muslims and above all the Hindus who make up 85% of the people. Virulently anti-Muslim Hindu fundamentalism could tear the country apart.

Fried chicken's fearsome foes

Article Abstract:

Indians who oppose the openings of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) outlets are usually either meat eaters who prefer India's traditional oven-roasted tandoori chicken or vegetarians who lobby against meat eating. Opponents have not been able to keep the outlets closed for long, as efforts to ban the fast-food restaurants have been rejected by Indian courts. KFC has found that opening outlets quietly without attracting undue attention has cut down on local opposition.
