Venturing into the global market: flying solo or joint venturing?

Article Abstract:

The International Industrial Conference, sponsored jointly by the Conference Board and the Stanford Research Institute, met in San Francisco during Sep 17-20, 1989. The 1989 meeting focused on managing in a global economy and focused on the benefits of strategic alliances, joint ventures, or 'going it alone' by buying into new markets. Sony Corp chmn Akio Morita opposes joint ventures because he believes US firms are volatile and lack long-term economic views. Yamatake-Honeywell Co CEO Haruo Okinobu is an advocate of joint ventures, stating that the key factors in a successful joint venture are clearly delineated partnership responsibilities and clear thinking. Nike Inc CEO Philip Knight believes joint ventures should be limited to three-year relationships and should preclude long-term alliances.

Newsletter: US business schools

Article Abstract:

Some experts believe that the 1200 US business schools have not established programs which give executives the necessary abilities to compete in a global economy. US business schools are exploring a variety of ways to make programs more international, including: exchange programs with overseas schools for students and faculty; technical assistance programs with international schools; and joint degree programs with the foreign language, political science, and cultural studies departments. The main focus of most of the international program efforts is to give faculty and students chances to teach, work, and travel abroad. Despite the on-going changes being made, US schools still need to make many changes before they can provide the international focus of many overseas institutions.
