Curved brickwork

Article Abstract:

There are a number of important factors to take into account when considering including curved brickwork in a design. The appearance of curved brick walling is influenced by the method employed to produce the curve and by the textural character of the brick. It is vital that the bricklayer locates the exact position of the striking point, accurately shapes templates to the correct radius and sets out the curve with care, ensuring that trammel is kept horizontal. Plumb and gauge must be continually checked, but only at plumbing points.

Building curved arches

Article Abstract:

Design and construction of bricked curved arches, or voussoirs, takes careful planning and skilled knowledge to achieve consistent results. It is essential to locate the centre point of an arch and work towards it in a set pattern. A temporary support must be used to build the arch over, which is removed when the brickwork has set.
