DENMARK: CARGO TRANSPORTS TO INCREASE

Article Abstract:

Once the Sound fixed link has been opened this summer, rail cargo transports between Sweden and Germany via Denmark are likely to increase considerably. The cargo volume will reach 6mn tonnes in 2004, up from nearly 2mn tonnes in 1998, anticipates Eigil Sabroe, transport director at Banestyrelsen, the Danish Rail Administration. Later on, the volume will increase to up to 18mn tonnes, he expects. , several private operators will operate the link: the Danish companies X-rail and PrivatBanen Sonderjylland, and the Swedish company BK-Tag. Eigil Sabroe says there is capacity for more transporters, but not in peak-hours. Prices are likely to fall by 20-30% as a consequence of the fixed link.
