DENMARK: FALL IN EXPORTS TO RUSSIA

Article Abstract:

Danish exports to Russia are likely to fall to about DKr 2.5bn (USD 0.34bn) in 1999 from more than DKr 6bn in 1997, says Steven Foster at the Danish Embassy in Moscow. The crisis in the Russian economy has reduced the exports of, especially, foods and consumer goods considerably as prices on the Russian market increased by 300% as a consequence of the reduced value of the Russian currency. However, a new market for raw products and food ingredients has opened up, such as meat to slaughter-houses, malt to breweries etc. In these fields, Denmark's exports have increased lately.

RUSSIA: BBH ANTICIPATES WEAKER GROWTH

Article Abstract:

Baltic Beverages Holding (BBH), 50% owned by the new Carlsberg Breweries, anticipates weaker growth. BBH CEO Christian Ramm-Schmidt says the brewing company has experienced a long period of strong growth bolstered by an explosive growth in beer consumption in Russia and an increase in the company's market. BBH's sales in 2000, however, reported a 43% growth to 19.3 million hectoliters and a turnover of DKr 4.8bn (US$585mn). Ramm-Schmidt expects the brewer to boost market share also during 2001.
