DENMARK: GENE-MODIFIED BEET TO BE APPROVED?

Article Abstract:

The gene-modified beet for animal feeds, developed by Danisco, DLF-Trifolium and Monsanto, will possibly be approved by the EU in the spring of 2000, the paper writes. Last Friday, an EU committee postponed its decision, but even if the committee votes against it, a decision will be taken by the Council of Ministers. As the European Commission wishes to approve the beet, all 15 countries have to vote against it to put a ban, and this is not likely to happen as 8-10 countries are positive towards gene-technology in general, the paper concludes.

DENMARK: OPPOSITION TO DANISCO APPLICATION

Article Abstract:

Denmark is to vote against Danish Danisco's application for sowing gene-manipulated sugar beets. Danish environment minister Svend Auken says a bigger consensus within the EU is required in the area of gene-modified organisms. The minister says he will contact Danisco and DLT-Trifolium that are responsible for the project together with Monsanto of the US and persuade them to withdraw their application.

DENMARK: DANISCO LOATH TO GIVE UP GMO BEET

Article Abstract:

Danish Danisco's chairman of the board Hugo Schroder said the company expects the EU to decide about the time for consideration regarding gene-modified agricultural products. This will, however, not result in withdrawing the application submitted jointly by Danisco, Dansk Trifolium and Monsanto to produce gene-modified sugar beets for animal feed.
