DENMARK:MOBILE OPERATORS FACE TIGHT COMPETITION

Article Abstract:

Competition in the market for mobile telephony gets increasingly tight, according to the annual book of the Danish Telecoms Authority, Telearbog 1999. The new mobile telephony companies are making profit at the cost of the older ones, Sonofon and Tele Danmark. At the end of 1999, 25% of mobile telephony clients had subscriptions with the newer companies Telia, Debitel or Mobilix compared with 15% at the end of 1998. Tele Danmark lost two per cent of its clients whereas Sonofon lost 7.5% of its clients. The combined number of mobile telephony clients in 1999 amounted to 2.6mn, which is a 36% increase. Half of Danes had a mobile telephony subscription at the end of 1999. French Mobilix was the best performer last year and it boosted its market share from 4% to 12.1%.

DENMARK: POOR KNOWLEDGE OF WAP

Article Abstract:

A survey conducted in Denmark by Vilstrup Interactive for the Danish dairy Politiken shows that only 50% of the Danish people have even heard of WAP phones i.e. mobile phones with Internet access. John Strand, the Danish telecoms analyst, says companies have not been efficient enough in making people aware of WAP phones. Martin Thorborg, director of jubii.dk, the Danish search engine, says WAP is not going to be a success among the masses. However, those who use WAP services today are satisfied with them. 44% of them use WAP services daily with news, transport and tourist information being the most popular subjects.
