In 1995 the DIY market was valued at around 5.52 billion pounds sterling, representing 7% growth over the last five years. The market is primarily affected by the economy and housing market. The most successful sector of the DIY market was hardware and tools, which rose 14%; while paints and wallcoverings, and building materials did not do so well. An overview of the market is given, along with details of market data, companies and brands, distribution, consumers and the future.

The British are becoming increasingly concerned with their lifestyle and eating habits as a result of better health information and education. The health and fitness market has increased in value since 1994, as more people are purchasing exercise equipment and joining health clubs. Clubs offering a wide range of sports and health services are becoming more popular in Britain because they cater for families as well as single adults.
