Chop Shop: Cuts at GM Portend Bigger Overhaul

General Motors Corp., which is planning to reduce its workforce by 15,000 employees while closing 15% of its plants, also announced plans to discontinue up to 20% of its vehicle models. The plan also includes the discontinuation of the Oldsmobile brand.

GM says it expects profit for next year from North America

Article Abstract:

General Motors Corp. (GM) is forecasting a profit in 2002 notwithstanding strong price competition and low sales in the United States. GM is also planning to reduce parts and contract worker expenditures.

DaimlerChrysler's Neon gets all gussied up; makeover marks shift in marketing to play up compacts

Article Abstract:

DaimlerChrysler AG has added luxury features to its compact Neon in the hope of marketing the budget- model vehicle. While the car's low cost appealed to consumers, sales began to decline after its introduction in 1994. The new improvements represent an industry- wide trend in upgrading less-expensive vehicle models. The newly-designed Neon was formulated so that DaimlerChrysler will be able to construct other vehicles using the same frame in coming years.
