The World Bank had agreed to lend $450 million to India to construct a massive hydroelectric power project that would involve thousands of dams and 50,000 miles of canals. Environmentalists and advocates for the thousands who will be displaced are hoping the World Bank pulls out of the deal.

A problem with the Bank: China

Article Abstract:

China is almost at the limit of which any country can have on loan from the World Bank. It would like to be able to qualify for new loans, but paying off what it already owes is going to be difficult enough because of a large budget deficit.
