Greetings from the fishbowl

Article Abstract:

Lance Loud recalls his naivete during his experience in 1974 when the documentary `An American Family' was made about the daily activities of his parents and siblings. For Loud, the exposure of his life in suburbia catered to his vanity. The documentary's conveyance that all of the action was natural and unrehearsed was not accurate. Myles Berkowitz's film `20 Dates' is about his effort to find a girlfriend, and is now showing in movie theaters. Berkowitz regarded his film project as an exploration of the game of dating rather than a personal expose of his life and personal frustrations.

Dangers of drift

Article Abstract:

Bangladesh's economy is being badly affected by the lack of investment in industries. This lack of investment is largely due to the government's inept handling of bad-debt problems in the banking sector. Moreover, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's government is facing law and order problems. The government has, however, succeeded in achieving budgetary discipline by rationalizing taxes and increasing their yield and by reducing public debt. Unfortunately, export-led growth, an important feature of government policy, is impossible without investment in industry.
