Datalink of the future

Article Abstract:

Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B), an airborne transponder technology, has been endorsed as a key element of the free flight environment. ADS-B will not only provide a more accurate picture of air traffic to controllers but will also make the data available to aircraft pilots in the vicinity. The systems, which will be independent of current ground-based secondary surveillance radars, are claimed to be the solution to air traffic delay problems.

Fog surrounds GPS progress

Article Abstract:

The Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Free Flight project to launch global positioning systems (GPS) as only navigation systems has not received industry support. The program was supposed to integrate GPS, along with WAAS and LAAS, as enabling technologies. Avionics manufacturers are criticizing FAA's exclusive dependence on the three systems as unsafe and are lobbying for a better design and a backup system.

High capacity under test

Article Abstract:

Controller Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) was tested in Dec 1999 by representatives from the FAA, aircraft operators and the US National Air Traffic Controllers' Assn. CPDLC allows aviation messages to be transmitted as digital bits of information. Tests of the datalink indicate that it is instantaneous, error-free, reliable and cannot be garbled or overwhelmed by other transmissions.
