De Carlo, architecture and the transformation of society

Article Abstract:

Architect, Giancarlo De Carlo has been awarded the Royal Institute of British Architects Gold Medal. He and other dissenters from the Congres Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne set up Team X in the 1950s and inspired architects throughout the 60s and 70s. Post Modernist architecture eclipsed the work of Team X but De Carlo believes this, together with modernism, is a dead movement. He sees the 1990s as a period of change where architects can take part in changing society through organisation of physical space. De Carlo's 40 years of work in Urbino, Italy illustrate his involvement with the users of his buildings.

Fine art at Millfield

Article Abstract:

A Fine Arts Centre, designed by Jeremy and Caroline Gould, has been built at Millfield School, Street, Somerset, England. The building is simple in form and shows what can be done on a limited budget using a shed form. The building forms a series of parallel zones and has a steel frame with concrete upper floors. Columns and beams have been left exposed and are painted white. The painting studios are on the upper floor and are single glazed to meet the needs of artists. However, double glazing was not necessary because of the insulation qualities of the rest of the construction.
