Dean tells his backers Wisconsin win is key: democratic hopeful says poor showing will put him out of the U.S. race

Article Abstract:

The Howard Dean campaign suggested supporters that winning Wisconsin was paramount for him for the U.S presidency, as he felt that if he cannot prevail in Wisconsin he couldnEt prevail anywhere. The campaign however, has often stressed the importance of a good showing Wisconsin's traditionally liberal and antiwar Democrats but it was the first explicit acknowledgement that failure in any particular state would effectively end his campaign to win the Democratic nomination.

Richard A. Gephardt, a US congressman, is becoming the Democratic presidential candidate that Republicans fear the most in the upcoming 2004 election. Gephardt has strong backing among labor unions and strong roots in the industrial Midwest region, a politically important area.
