Defiance from the nave of a Burmese temple

Article Abstract:

A writer describes an encounter with student protesters. Myanmar's government had closed down universities, which were usually centers of demonstrations during times of unrest in the country. Because of this, some of them were traveling back to their hometowns. Topics of the conversations between the students and the writer are also presented.

The true legacies of Roh and Chen

Article Abstract:

Roh Moo Hyun and Chen Shui-bian's had been criticized for their personalities and their tendency for erratic policy making. It must be noted that during their tenure, Roh and Chen had imposed political and bureaucratic reforms. South Korean and Taiwanese voters are beginning to recognize policies over personalities in evaluating their rulers.

Burma: straining at the seams: widespread discontent could force political change

President Ne Win's political regime has caused widespread discontent among the Burmese which gave rise to student activists. The economic condition of the country and the pressures from donor countries and creditors are seen as factors for political reform.
