Deficit thinking

Article Abstract:

Current methods of calculating the balance of international trade are antiquated, and can lead to poor trade policy. Roughly 1/2 of America's import and export activity occurs between corporations and their foreign affiliates, causing confusion over whether such transactions are internal or international. Tabulating imports and exports is further complicated by the transnational nature of production. In addition, service industries are not calculated in balance of trade figures, despite the pervasiveness of American credit cards, computer software, airlines and the like.

Summer's fires: hazy thinking on the environment

Article Abstract:

The hysterical reaction to the haze covering much of Southeast Asia resulting from the forest fires in Indonesia will not lead to common-sense solutions. It is obvious that the haze is a health hazard, particularly for the vulnerable, but it is not known whether there will be any long-term effect. Regulations drawn up to tackle the immediate problem may be detrimental in the long-term. Following the haze, Southeast Asians will demand the right to cleaner air. Regulations must focus on industrial practices which produce most air pollution.
