Defining the true cost of logistics

Article Abstract:

Smaller companies need to assess the cost of their logistics operations and this involves more than simply examining physical distribution costs. There are dangers such as selecting the wrong route, demands of dominant customers making false assumptions about costs, and the demands of customers using just-in-time methods. There are self-help groups for smaller firms tackling these problems. The Institute of Logistics has set up a number of groups to in the United Kingdom help increase awareness of these issues.

Getting your goods to market

Article Abstract:

European logistics strategies have been influenced by the ideas of cheap transportation and expensive warehousing and this has influenced a trend toward just-in-time methods. There has been a debate on the extent to which traffic growth is sustainable in the United Kingdom, and this has led to an interest in alternatives to roads, such as railroads, and a possibility of increased usage of tolls. There is also greater emphasis on links between distribution companies and their customers.

Take your partners

Article Abstract:

Partnerships between logistics companies and their customers have become more important in the United Kingdom, with greater emphasis on integration of parts of the supply chain. Just-in-time methods have become more common and customers' expectations have increased, but their hopes are not always met. Closer links between logistics companies and clients mean that management style and system compatibility may rank as highly as price when contracts are awarded.
