Demolishing an office block safely

Article Abstract:

One of IBM UK's main criteria for the demolition of a nine-storey office block at its laboratories in Hursley, UK, was to recycle as much material as possible. Other criteria were to ensure safe demolition, to avoid damage and operational difficulties for the plant in other buildings, and not to raise noise levels at the site boundary. Griffiths McGee, the demolition contractor, decided to take down the building floor by floor into skips. This meant that materials could be separated at the workface, with the result that some 90-95% were recycled. The demolition project is further discussed.

The Dome experience

Article Abstract:

The Millennium Dome in Greenwich, London, was designed in 1996 to cover a exhibition to celebrate the year 2000, called the Millennium Experience. The predicted cost of the structure will be 40 million pounds sterling and it will provide an all-weather cover for the year long exhibition. The Dome has to conform to standard building regulations, despite it being primarily a shelter. Fire safety and wind resistant measures have been included, as have environmental aspects, such as ventilation and lighting. The Dome is expected to be completed by August 1998.

Management by measuring

Article Abstract:

Design firms are introducing more measuring and benchmarking techniques in an attempt to reduce escalating construction costs at the end of a project. Construction and design firm BAA has introduced global targets for cutting costs. It expects to reduce costs by 10% between 1997 and 1998, with a further 30% reduction in costs by the year 200. It expects to reduce the number of accidents covering 100,000 manhours to fall from 0.7 in 1998 to 0.5 by the year 2000.
