Deng legacy: a China at Peace

Article Abstract:

Deng Xiaoping was conscious that he needed to groom a successor for himself and a generation of successors, when he assumed power in China in 1978. He announced that the party would concentrate on the economic development of the country and Deng personally established diplomatic relations with the US in 1978. It was also Deng who decided that Beijing would take Hong Kong back under the concept of one country, two systems. It is unlikely that China will see another saviour such as Mao or paramount leader such as Deng, and the death of Deng could see the country return to a higher degree of normality.

Deng, ever the pragmatist, is praised for his 'theory.' (Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping) (Column)

Article Abstract:

The use of the term 'theory' to describe the ideas of Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping illustrates the traditional Chinese attitude toward honoring leaders without showing disrespect to their predecessors. Deng's ideas are called 'theory' rather than 'thoughts' to avoid denigrating Mao Zedong, with whom the word 'thoughts' is associated. Mao's title of 'chairman' is likewise no longer used to avoid dishonoring him, just as Sun Yat-sen's and Chiang Kai-shek's titles were retired after their deaths. However, Deng's admirers do not hesitate to claim that he surpassed Mao in making socialism work.

Choosing Hong Kong's leader: chief executive must understand 'one country, two systems.'(Eye on Asia)(Column)

Article Abstract:

The method of selection of Hong Kong's first chief executive under Chinese rule will set the course for its future and determine how the world views China. The Preparatory Committee must assemble a Selection Committee that truly represents the people of Hong Kong, and it should produce more than one qualified name to preserve credibility. Statements by senior Chinese officials suggest China will substantively appoint Hong Kong's leaders, but comments by President Jiang Zemin have been more reassuring.
