Denmark: Australia a new major market for Danish pork
Article Abstract:
Danish exports of pork to Australia are estimated to amount to a total of 14,000 tonnes this year. This is 3,000-4,000 less than in 2000, which according to Danish Crown sales manager Jens Haven Christiansen is a good figure considering that Australia closed its borders to Danish pork in the March-July period this year due to BSE crisis and outbreak of the foot and mouth disease. The value of Danish pork exports to Australia this year will be around DKr320mn (US$38mn). In 1999, Danish pork exports to Australia amounted to 8,000 tonnes at a value of DKr120mn vs. 17,6000 tonnes worth DKr335mn in 2000. Australia relies on pork imports from Denmark as it is suffering from a shortage of its own caused by pork exports to Malaysia. Malaysia started importing pork from Australia a couple of years ago as it was hit by a pig disease that caused havoc for its production.

DENMARK: POLAND TO LIFT THE BAN ON PORK IMPORTS

Danish exporters of pork welcome Polish authorities' decision to lift the Polish ban on the import of Danish pork. Danish meat producer Danske Slagterier's international manager Knud Buhl says Russian importers of Danish pork may suffer somewhat due to the Polish decision. Poland may become a more attractive market for Danish exporters than Russia as Polish importers buy the same type of pork as Russians and they are also prepared to pay a somewhat better price than the Russians.
