Denmark: Danisco to invest in WellGen

Article Abstract:

Danisco's venture fund is to invest an undisclosed sum in the newly-established American company WellGen, that owns a patented technology that makes it possible to locate substances in foods that can activate genes that either prevent cancer or fight cancer cells. WellGen is currently working on an extract from orange peels that has been found to prevent colon cancer in studies with mice. Other projects focus on prostate and breast cancer. WellGen is also co-operating with Hills Pet Food, a subsidiary of Colgate-Palmolive, as the extracts can be used on animals as well.

DENMARK: DANISCO TO SELL OFF BUSINESSES

Article Abstract:

The Danish group Danisco is planning to sell off two of its businesses in the fiscal 1999/2000; and another two in 2000/2001, according to disclosure at the general meeting. Stock exchange quotations have been considered, but rejected by the company as the market value would be relatively low. Hugo Schroder, chairman of the board, said Danish investors are not willing to pay enough. The general meeting received a proposal that Danisco Distillers should be sold to a Danish investor, but this was rejected in principle by the chairman.

DENMARK: DANISCO POSSIBLE ACQUISITION OBJECT

Article Abstract:

As the market value has declined considerably, the Danish food and packaging group Danisco has become a possible acquisition object, the paper writes, referring to analysts on the financial market. In the last 18 months, the market value has fallen by DKr 15bn (USD 2bn) to about DKr 25bn. MD Alf Durch-Pedersen says the company is under-estimated, and adds that the focus now is on the streamlining process. He says most analysts agree that this is the right thing to do.
