Denmark: Danish Christmas ham gains foothold in Finland

Article Abstract:

Danish Christmas ham exports to Finland have doubled over the past five years despite the fact that Finns prefer domestic meat. Danish meat, however, ranks second among Finns due to price as well as high quality. MD Morten Holm of Findane A/S, which is part of the Dat-Schaub International S/S, which in turn is part of the Danish Crown group, says the company expects to sell around 150,000 Christmas hams at the value of DKr16mn (US$1.9mn) and DKr18mn this year. Danish cheese exports to Finland are also on the rise. Last year, cheese exports reached DKr1.1bn. Total Danish exports to Finland doubled to DKr13.7bn in 2000 vs. 1995. This year's exports, however, are forecast to decline by almost 10%. This is chiefly ascribed to the sharp drop in oil prices.
