Denmark: Retail chains target Nordic region via Denmark

Article Abstract:

A number of international retail chains ranging from British Debenhams to French perfumery business Sephora to coffee-bar giant Starbucks are planning entering the Danish market as well as using Denmark as a springboard for further Nordic expansion. The British supermarket chain Debenhams has announced that it will open a store in Copenhagen in 2003. Starbucks is negotiating with Reitan Narvesen about a joint drive to set up cafes in the whole of the Nordic market. Home Depot, the construction market chain, has also announced plans to enter the Nordic market. Dansk Traelast MD Steen Weisoe rejects rumours of being subject to take-over bid by Home Depot.

DENMARK: DEPARTMENT STORES TO OFFER BRANDS

Article Abstract:

Bilka, A-Z and OBS Denmark, Danish department store chains, have signed agreements with the sports brand producers Nike and Adidas. The aim is to increase the range of brands in the department stores; this will include even cosmetics and audio/video equipment, says Poul Guldborg, information manager at Dansk Supermarked, which owns Bilka. Bilka is planning to reduce prices of Nike's and Adidas' products. This will affect Danish sports shops negatively, especially as they already are facing a sales crisis.

DENMARK: SPORTS CHAINS TAKE REVENGE

Article Abstract:

Major Danish sports chains such as Intersport and Sportmaster, as well as the department store Magasin, react against the brand producers Nike's and Adidas' decision to sell its products through discount stores such as Bilka and OBS. Director Torben Schwabe, Magasin, says its purchase agreements with the companies were signed under misleading conditions, and adds that Magasin will focus on other brands in future. Intersport and Sportmaster are planning to do the same.
