Denmark: Vitamin-enriched foods benefit state finances

Article Abstract:

Major cuts in state expenses could be achieved with the help of foods enriched with vitamins and minerals, according to Tage Affershold, head of 3A Business Consulting. For example the costs for treating osteoporosis in Denmark could be reduced by DKr5bn a year with the help of foods with added calcium vitamin D. Denmark has highly restrictive laws when it comes to enriched foods whereas England has the most liberal laws in Europe. The European Commission is in the process of harmonising the regulations in the field and a new directive is expected to be put forward within a couple of years time.

Denmark: Sales of organic foods on the increase

Article Abstract:

After a decline in 2000, sales of organic foods are again on the increase in Denmark. In the first six months of 2001, organic foods accounted for 5.1% of total food sales, compared with 4.9% in 2000. Lene Stentoft, marketing manager of Okologiens Hus, an association of 40-50 organic companies, expects sales to increase even more in the latter part of 2001, as there are several campaigns for organic foods during the period. In all, sales of organic foods are estimated to reach just over DKr 2bn (USD 240mn) in 2001.
