Departure of Sanyo unit's chief is a loss for maquiladoras

Article Abstract:

Motahuro Iue came to Baja California, Mexico, in 1978 to establish Sanyo E and E Corp. The company he founded grew to become the largest manufacturer of compact refrigerators In North America and provided employment to 700 people. Among his achievements is the transformation of the orientation of maquiladoras industry to one that is supportive of the local community. In 1999, Iue decided to return to Japan when the North American Free Trade Agreement and the Mexican government imposed stringent rules to maquiladoras.

Cargill unit is preparing to swoop into property market

Article Abstract:

Cargill Financial Services Corp is set to enter the Japanese mortgage industry by buying $100 million worth of bad commercial mortgages. The company is a US based 'vulture' investor whose investment in the Japanese market may signal the start of a trend where US investors begin to seek bargains in the Japanese market. Property prices in Japan have fallen by as much as 80% and the investment reflects industry-wide sentiment about Japanese mortgage financing.

MOrtgage Corp signs $20b debt program

The Hong Kong Mortgage Corp. signed an agreement with five primary sealers and 23 selling group members for the HK$20 bn debt issuing program which targets institutional investors. The program will complement the HKMC's HK$20 bn note issuance program launched in January 1998. The program further enhance the agency's ability to raise funds through the debt market to support the expansion and diversification of its mortgage purchase program. *
