Article Abstract:

Indonesia has tackled its economic problems by reducing tariffs and removing many of the monopolies which existed. This should have reduced prices and increased competition. However, the price of sugar remains at 58% above the world average price because this allows the government to subsidize the price of rice. However, there are also many vested interests in keeping the price high. President Suharto needs to remove more monopolies and actively begin deregulation if inflation is to be kept under control. This may be difficult because it will adversely affect many of his own family.

Plumbing the depths

Article Abstract:

Freeport Indonesia has now dug into the core of the Grasberg mine, having reached almost three kilometres underground. The depth of the tunnel, which took five years to dig, is aimed at estimating the resources of Grasberg and at draining off the open-pit mine over it between 2006 and 2011. During the digging, Freeport has found Big Gossan, a deposit with 37 million tonnes of ore reserves, and the Kucing Liar resource, with around 250 million tonnes. Total Freeport reserves could be worth over 60 billion dollars, and production could continue into the 2030s.

Shades of discontent

Article Abstract:

Protesting Indonesian voters may register their dissatisfaction over the Golkar party's policies and its inevitable re-election in the May 1997 parliamentary elections by using white insignia. The colour white represents an invalidated ballot to the Indonesian electorate. The poor and disheartened voter is expected to protest in this way. The major political parties uses red, green and yellow to represent their policies.
