Reserve design for species preservation

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine a relatively general methodology for the selection of parcels for a natural area reserve where the objectives of selection are twofold. The two objectives are the maximum number of species whose locales are preserved and the minimum investment in parcels. The problem was approached using a zero-one integer program. Solution was by a combination of a greedy heuristic followed by heuristic concentration which derives a reduced set of variables for the zero-one program.
