Desperation in Ecuador

Article Abstract:

The president of Ecuador, Jamil Mahuad, plans to dollarise the economy, though it is unclear precisely what he means by this proposal. Ecuador has been hit by recession and suffered a drop in output of 7% in 1999, and public finances have also been hit. There is a lack of confidence in the currency, the sucre, so there could be benefits from abandoning this currency. Central bank reserves have to be used to purchase sucres if dollarisation is carried out. Dollarisation alone will not tackle Ecuador's problems, but could provide the basis for other reforms.
