Diplomacy's dark side: secret deal saved Khmer Rouge

Article Abstract:

China and Thailand used the clout of the Association of South East Asian Nations to gain advantage over Vietnam in its invasion of Cambodia. China and Thailand funneled supplies to the Khmer Rouge for the group to continue with its struggle to defeat the Vietnamese invaders. Thailand justified its support to the Khmer Rouge as a strategic defense, to prevent Vietnam from threatening Thailand. China on the other hand, used its support to avenge itself from the humiliation resulting from Vietnam's victory in Cambodia in toppling the China-backed Khmer Rouge regime.

Territorial disputes between China and Japan are expected to worsen unless both countries reach an agreement. Neither country are willing to concede due to the islands rich natural resources. The countries are also at odds on East China Sea boundaries, with Japan claiming the area up to the Okinawa Trough and China insisting on a larger maritime jurisdiction.

Taiwan election is a victory for democracy

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's first free presidential elections on Mar. 23, 1996 will serve as a major victory for democracy in the region. The elections will culminate several years of democratic transformation which began in 1991 with the abolition of martial law. Other Asian countries can take the initiative and follow the examples shown by Taiwan. The US needs to rally toward Taiwan to ensure the development of democracy in other Asian nations such as Singapore, Vietnam, Laos and eventually, China.
