Indonesia's trade minister says Jakarta won't allow private collection of levies

Indonesian Industry and Trade Min. Tunky Ariwibowo announced that the government will not give permission to private firms to collect official levies. His statement means that the company chaired by Indonesian Pres. Suharto's grandson will not be allowed to collect new beer tax in Bali. Controversy broke out in the famous province when PT Arbamass Multi Invesco was given authority to collect beer levy, which was opposed by two major brewers.

Anarchy may pose serious threat to Suharto's presidency

Article Abstract:

Indonesian Pres Suharto's administration is in serious danger of being overthrown as rioters swarm Jakarta and aggravate anarchic conditions in the country. Police could do little as mobs ran amok ransacking, looting and burning departent stores, supermarkets, police stations, churches and factories. Many feel that the Suharto administration's position has been weakened by the violence that rocked the capital.
